Most people’s experiences with tequila aren’t filled with the fondest of memories. But it’s not really the spirit’s fault — any ritual which involves licking salt and sucking lime isn’t going to be pretty. Thankfully, El Capo is here to change that — this South American inspired bar specialises in the Mexican spirit. Inside there’s a typically Northern Quarter decor, complete with reclaimed furniture and exposed brickwork, but there’s a hint of Mexico too, with their Day Of The Dead wall art and Batik-inspired tiles. Behind the bar, there’s a selection of over 80 tequilas to choose from and 21 (tequila infused, obviously) craft cocktails available. Expect to find nachos, tacos, fajitas, tapas and more on their food menu. But this isn’t anywhere close to the Tex-Mex chain restaurant fast food you can find anywhere — all the dishes are inspired by genuine South American experiences by El Capo’s head chef Troy Amador who travelled the continent. Don’t miss out on their lengthy happy hours with cheap booze offers, and their daily specials are a steal — get your hands on some £1 tacos and 50p wings to beat the midweek blues.
El Capo was named one of the best new places in the North West in The Skinny Food and Drink Survey 2015. Check out the other winners as voted for by The Skinny readers, and read our feature on all of the best new places in the North West.
