Formerly the site of rejuvenated cinema-bar, The Salon, this venue's latest incarnation as Hillhead Bookclub finds it lodged much more cosily in the bo-hip (adj. - bohemian hipster) category.
The bunch of literary folk they are at the Bookclub, it's hard to upstage their autobiographical description as "a venue where left and right handers can exist in harmony without fear of persecution".The venue takes aim and fires successfully at the student population, luring them into the library-themed setting with the attraction of strawberry mojito lifestyles on milkshake budgets (literally - Mojitos will cost you a meagre three of your scottish pounds.) If that doesn't sound quintessentially British enough for you, perhaps consider their sewing clubs on Tuesdays, bingo on Wednesdays and vintage fairs on Sundays.
In terms of tasty treats, expect nostalgic comfort food (think steak and ale pies and eton mess – though, obviously, not together) which is soundtracked by a mix of vinyl classics and trendy young things on the playlist. A serious appreciation for cold drinks and hot live acts means that Hillhead's band and DJ residencies will have you queuing round the block for bookclub membership. Never before have studious weekends been so fun.
