Located on the University of Manchester campus, the Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama is a multi-arts venue hosting a variety of events including concert recitals, theatre performances and the occasional stand-up comedy event. Since opening in 2003, the building has held classic plays as well as contemporary and newly written theatre in the John Thaw Studio Theatre, where students take up the roles of actors, writers, directors and technicians, and many big band and classical concerts in the bigger capacity Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall. As well as being a space for University of Manchester students to study and perform, it has also hosted a number of professional musicans and actors alongside prize winning authors — it has previously held a reading series which saw the likes of Will Self, Clive James and Martin Amis appear in the theatre. The building is also home to a range of textile artwork by the internationally renowned Alice Kettle, which is on permanent display. Opening times vary depending on the event so check our listings for details. [Charlotte Davies]
