Manchester Jewish Museum is the UK's only Jewish museum located outside of London. Residing in Manchester's former Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, the building reopened as a museum in 1984 and tells the history of the Jewish settlement in Manchester and their history over the last 200 years. The grade II listed building is the oldest synagogue building in Manchester and has a large collection of information, including documents, photographs and items promoting the history of the Jewish community in Manchester as well as preserving the memory of the Holocaust through exhibitions. A lot of the collection has been donated by local families to make the exhibits as personal and relatable as possible. The building also has a big library area with books exploring all areas of Jewish history. It also offers guided tours throughout the week, focussing on the synagogue itself as well as the life experiences of specific Jewish people, and it also offers a learning programme to schools.
