One of Manchester's hidden gems, The Portico Library is a beautiful gallery space and a private library, stocked with rare 19th century books. Located between Piccadilly Gardens and St Peters Square, the building is unmissable with its distinctive Greek inspired exterior. There is also a pub called The Bank located on the building's ground floor. Opened in 1806, the Portico Library stores a collection of works from the Victorian era including first edition literature, biographies and travel documents covering voyages by the likes of Captain Cook and other explorers. The library is only open to paying members and researchers, but membership gives access to all areas of the library building. There is a free admission gallery open to the public at all times; since opening in 1987 the space has been used for showcasing local artistic talent and has held exhibitions on the likes of Beatrix Potter and Alice In Wonderland before.
