Ah, the Meadows. The lungs of the City of Edinburgh, where flat open grass spaces and tree-lined walks are enjoyed by the public all year round. When the sun shines it will be populated by more people than you knew existed in Edinburgh, while on a cold winter day it’s a misty, eerie passage-way to the Edinburgh University Library. In the times in-between there are lots of events that happen on the turf. Not to mention the tennis courts and play area for wee ones at the Southside. There’s the Meadows’ Marathon which takes place in March (featuring a 5K, 10K and Half Marathon for the less hardcore); the beloved Meadows Festival each June, where bric-a-brac, food outlets and live music grace the meadows for a weekend; and, more recently, the space has been used by the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Everything from American football to yoga happens on the grass on a day-to-day basis; it’s a lovely space for a walk or a cycle, and a beautiful, green part of Edinburgh’s varied landscape.
